What is Music Therapy?

The Australian Music Therapy Association defines music therapy as:

“a research-based allied health profession in which music is used to actively support people as they aim to improve their health, functioning and well-being. It can help people of all ages to manage their physical and mental health and enhance their quality of life”

Creative arts therapies (including music, drama, dance/movement and art therapy) are often motivating therapy modalities for children and adults to express themselves creatively as they work towards their goals.

What does a Music Therapist do?

A music therapist supports participants to work towards their therapy goals, with music as the medium for engagement.

A music therapy session might include:

  • improvisation using a range of musical instruments;
  • learning to play an instrument or singing/playing favourite songs and music;
  • dance/movement to music;
  • songwriting or beatmaking;
  • music listening and reflection; and
  • using music to accompany exercise, imaginative play or art activities.

Who can benefit from Music Therapy?

Music therapy is an accessible, fun and social therapy modality commonly offered in early childhood, disability, education, health, mental health, community and aged care settings to complement other therapies and support services.

You do not need to have musical training to benefit from music therapy!

What training is required to be a Music Therapist?

To practice as a Registered Music Therapist in Australia you must complete a tertiary level qualification which is recognised or accredited by the Australian Music Therapy Association.

In Australia, courses are currently offered by the University of Melbourne and University of Western Sydney.

If you are interested in training as a music therapist, the Australian Music Therapy Association offers an annual Music Therapy Career Information Night.
